Sony has been a juggernaut in the gaming industry since its launch of the original Playstation way back in 1994. More than 20 years later, the PS4 is out and Sony is still at the top of their game. The Playstation 4 is self proclaimed as “the best place to play” and it many ways it could be argued that is true with its list of exclusive titles, online support and stronger hardware than the rest of the competition. This year is Playstation’s best year yet and here’s why you should pick up Sony’s console in 2017.

The biggest selling point for the PS4 is its long list of console exclusives. You won’t get to play titles like NieR: Automata, Nioh, Bloodborne, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Until Dawn and upcoming titles like the new Spiderman game on other consoles. All of this is on top of all the multi-platform games it shares with Xbox One and PC like Battlefield, Call of Duty and Madden. Playstation 4 is the only home to the MLB The Show series now so that can be a selling point for sports fans out there.

The PS4 has a revised version called the PS4 Pro which features better graphics and the potential for games to render in a 4K display. Games have been taking advantage of this new hardware such as Nioh, which features an option to play with a 4K resolution or a 60 frames per second framerate. The new boost mode introduced with the console will give older games that haven’t received a patch for the new hardware a boost in performance as well.

PS PLUS

Playstation has a system similar to Xbox’s Games with Gold with PS Plus. These games are “free” provider you are a Playstation Plus subscriber. These games are available to you as long as you remain a member. More games come out every month and some good games have been part of the program in past such as NBA 2K16 and Resident Evil.

PS4 is the only console that has taken advantage of virtual reality so far by creating its own VR headset called PSVR. Some AAA developers have taken advantage of the headset like Resident Evil 7, which features the ability to play through the whole game using the headset. The headset works on both the PS4 and PS4 Pro but performs much better on the Pro.

The PS4 is very affordable right now with prices starting at $300 for the slim model and $400 for the Pro model. If you look around enough, you’ll find some bundles with your favorite games and even some limited edition versions such as this one featuring the original Playstation design.

The PS4 has been out long enough that if you’re in the market for a new console, you’ve likely already made the decision to buy one or not. If you haven’t made up your mind, there’s a lot to like about the PS4. It has a big list of console exclusives and gets a lot of JRPGs like the Tales series, Persona and Star Ocean that aren’t available on other consoles. If these games interest you, the PS4 is definitely the console for you. If none of the PS4 exclusives or Xbox One exclusives excite you, it’s worth getting the PS4 for the sole reason that it runs the games better. Many games on Xbox One run in 900p due to hardware limitations while the PS4 will usually reach 1080p. The PS4 will make for an excellent primary console, even if you opt to not grab the Pro.
