‘Picross 3D’ Available on Wii U Virtual Console Today

The Wii U Virtual Console train keeps on chugging along despite the launch of the Nintendo Switch.

Today’s release is Picross 3D, a puzzle game originally released for the Nintendo DS. The game overview page describes it as a game both beginners and Picross veterans will enjoy.

The game shows the player a grid of squares which have to be filled in to make a picture. The player destroys parts of the cube to create a 3D image. It sort of acts as a Sudoku puzzle on steroids. It’s much easier to see than to explain. It’s definitely a game for the patient gamers out there as it will require a good amount of thinking.

The Nintendo Switch launched without its own version of Virtual Console and it’s likely it will eventually appear on the console but no announcement has been made as of yet.

5 Secrets or Easter Eggs in ‘Breath of the Wild’ You Might Not Know About

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a massive game with so much to do. Hyrule has never been this big and with that comes a lot of secrets to be discovered. In your quest to destroy Ganon, don’t forget to stop and try some new things out.

With so much to do and explore, you can miss some hidden secrets so here are 5 secrets and easter eggs you might not know about.

You Can Ride Wild Animals

Zelda, Breath of the Wild

This will work best if you have the stealth clothes and some stealth elixirs on hand but you can actually mount and ride wild animals in Breath of the Wild. Wild animals such as bears or deer don’t listen as well as horses and you can’t register and board them so this won’t actually be a replacement for your horse but it’s still fun to try.

Shooting Stars Give You Star Fragments

Zelda, Breath of the Wild

(From Gosu Noob)

If you take a look up at the night sky of Hyrule, you might see a shooting star zip across the sky. Whenever you notice this, take note of where it lands and head there as quick as you can. When you get there, you can collect a star fragment which will then be used to upgrade certain pieces of armor. Don’t sell it.

You Can Get the Rust Off Your Weapons

Zelda, Breath of the Wild

There’s no doubt that in your travels you’ve come across a rusty claymore, broadsword, shield ect. and quickly discarded it for something better. There’s actually a way to get that weapon into brand-new condition. Next time you have one in your inventory, take it to an octorok and when it starts inhaling, toss it your rusty weapon or shield and it’ll clean the rust off it for you and give you a new weapon.

Being Naked Pays Off

Zelda Breath of the Wild

It’s exactly what it sounds like. If you’re swimming, you’ll actually go quicker if you strip yourself of all your armor. Since stamina is being drained while you’re in the water in this game, speed matters. If you happen to not be wearing leg armor, if you kick open a chest, Link will have a special pain animation where he grabs his leg in pain from the kick.

Dogs Can Find Treasure For You

Zelda, Breath of the Wild

If you see a dog in the wild somewhere you can actually train it to find treasure for you. In my experience, I’ve seen them hang out by stables and if you give a dog three pieces of fruit or meat, it will become friendly toward you and can lead you to treasure. A dog at the Snowfield Stable will lead you to a star fragment. These treasures mostly vary between rupees, weapons and arrows.

‘Pokemon Go’: When Will the New Update Be Released?

‘Pokemon Go’ is available for iOS and Android devices. (Niantic)

Pokemon Go is due to receive an update this week.

That’s assuming Niantic follows the same schedule that they have generally stuck with over the past several months. Pokemon Go updates are typically released every two weeks, and it has now been almost two weeks since the previous update.

The most recent update to the game came out on Saturday, March 4th. This was a very minor update that was not even announced on Niantic’s website and social media pages.

The update before that came out on February 25th. This was another very minor update that only implemented some performance improvements, but it was announced on Niantic’s Twitter page.

The last major update to the game that actually rolled out new features came out on February 16th. This, of course, was the giant update that released 80 new Pokemon into the game and also added new items and features.

To give you a sense of Niantic’s update schedule, here are the dates on which Pokemon Go updates have been announced over the past six months, not counting the unannounced March 4th update:

  • Friday, February 24th
  • Thursday, February 16th
  • Saturday, January 28th
  • Tuesday, January 17th
  • Thursday, December 22nd
  • Monday, December 19th
  • Wednesday, December 7th
  • Friday, November 18th
  • Sunday, November 6th
  • Wednesday, October 26th
  • Sunday, October 23rd
  • Monday, October 10th
  • Monday, September 26th
  • Friday, September 23rd

As you can see, Niantic hardly sticks to the same precise schedule, and updates can be announced on pretty much any day of the week.

However, Niantic generally aims to release an update roughly every two weeks; an exception to that was in late December, when there was an extended period without an update presumably due to the holidays. It also took a bit longer than usual for the Generation 2 update to be released.

Still, based on recent history, we should likely expect to have a Pokemon Go update announced sometime between now and Sunday, March 19th.

So what might this new update entail? Probably nothing too major, as it has only been about four weeks since the massive update that added over 80 new Pokemon to the game. This one will likely be another update that mainly fixes glitches and addresses performance issues.

However, whenever one of these updates comes out, players quickly analyze all of the code searching for clues about upcoming features. For instance, a few months ago, it became clear that Niantic was working on a “buddy” system for the game long before they actually announced it because players found reference to this in the game’s update code. Even if the new update doesn’t roll out any new features, then, it may contain some clues about Niantic’s plans for the next several months.

Stay tuned for more information about the new Pokemon Go update.

‘Feminist Frequency’ Calls ‘Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ Sexist With Series of Tweets

Feminist Frequency, the non-profit organization ran by Anita Sarkeesian, creator of the Tropes vs Women in Video Games Youtube series, has called out The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for being sexist.

In a series of tweets posted to the account yesterday, Breath of the Wild is called out for having “sexist plot devices” and suggests critics don’t mention blatant sexism in video games if the game is good. Mention is made of the memories Link collects throughout the story and how the game acknowledges the ongoing problem of Zelda being a damsel in distress but doesn’t do anything about.

This isn’t the first time The Legend of Zelda has come under fire for being considered sexist. Ocarina of Time was called classist, sexist and racist in an article on Salon.

Anita Sarkeesian rose to fame for her role in Gamergate in 2014. She received death threats and was forced to move out of her home through all of this controversy according to an interview with The Washington Post. She even had YouTube delete her Feminist Frequency channel for a little while.

‘Pokemon Go’: How Rare Are Evolution Items?

The second generation of Pokemon were added into ‘Pokemon Go’ in February. (Niantic)

Several weeks after evolution items were added into Pokemon Go, hundreds of players have literally never once encountered them.

In Pokemon Go, evolution items are used in combination with candy to evolve certain Pokemon. For instance, Dragon Scale is used to evolve Seadra into Kingdra. The other evolution items are King’s Rock, Metal Coat, Sun Stone, and Upgrade.

The only way to get these evolution items is to visit PokeStops, but the items are so ridiculously rare that it could take you months of gameplay to actually get them all. The exact drop rate is not known, but it’s low enough that one Reddit user recently reported that it took them 10,000 PokeStop visits to obtain all of the evolution items. This means that an item was given out only .00304 percent of the time.

Other players have had slightly more luck, but virtually no one has obtained all of the evolution items in anything less than 1,000 PokeStop visits. You should not expect to receive any more than one item every few hundred stops. If you visit 10 PokeStops a day, then, it will take about three and a half months to get all of the evolution items, and that’s if you’re lucky.

In fact, in a recent poll of 2,368 Pokemon Go players, 62 percent of them said they have not yet received all of the evolution items. Seventeen percent have received three of the items, while another 17 percent have received one, 19 percent have received two, and nine percent have not received any at all.

At this time, it does not seem that there’s much rhyme or reason to how evolution items are given out. When the February update first came out, players were guaranteed an evolution item after a seven-day PokeStop streak, but bonus is no longer in effect. And there do not appear to be certain types of PokeStops that are more likely to give out evolution items than others.

The rarity of evolution items has had an especially negative affect on rural players, who do not have access to as many PokeStops and for whom it is even more difficult to come across any of the items that are required in order to evolve certain Pokemon.

Players have over the past few weeks begged Niantic to adjust the drop rate of evolution items, but so far, the company has not announced any plans to do so.

‘Pokemon Go’: How to Get Items From PokeStops While in a Car

Pokemon Go is available for iOS and Android devices. (Niantic)

Pokemon Go is one of those mobile games that’s perfect to play while on a commute to work, but unfortunately, the app prevents players from doing much if they are in a moving vehicle like a train, as there is a speed limit that limits your activity. Now, some dedicated fans have found a few ways to get around this speed limit.

This trick is intended to allow players to collect items from PokeStops while they are on a train, a bus, or in the passenger seat of a car. The game should of course never be played while you are operating a vehicle.

Reddit user CatFrogArts this week posted a recently-discovered glitch that helps gamers to get around the speed limit. When you’re getting close to a PokeStop, open your journal. You do this by hitting the player avatar on the bottom left of the screen, selecting the button on the bottom right with the three horizontal lines, and then selecting journal.

Then, while you’re still close to the PokeStop, close the journal, quickly swipe the Photo Disc, and you should be able to collect the items. The idea here is that opening and closing the journal makes for a few seconds where the game is loading and does not properly register the speed at which you are traveling, and this gives you a brief window of time in which to obtain the PokeStop items.

This is one of several tricks that players have tried in order to get items from PokeStops while in a moving vehicle. Another one posted by Reddit user ger7zyzz is specifically for Android devices: lock the phone right before getting in range of the PokeStop, and then immediately unlock it once you are within range. Then, quickly swipe on the Photo Disc. Once again, the idea is to try to collect your items while the game is still loading and while the white spinning PokeBall is on the top of the screen.

Still other players will sometimes specifically time the opening of the app for when they are just about in range of a PokeStop. When you first open the game, it takes a few moments for it to load everything properly, and this again provides a brief window of opportunity. For this to work, though, you have to already know where the PokeStop in question is located.

Have you had any success with getting items from PokeStops while in a moving vehicle? Let us know in the comments below!

Nintendo Switch Production To Double Starting April 1

Nintendo is doubling their production on the Nintendo Switch from eight million units to 16 million according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The decision to double production is a result of demand for the system as it is currently sold out at most major retailers. The trend the Switch is on closely matches with the Wii, which sold 20 million units by the end of 2007, a year after its launch.

Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo chief executive, said the company would ship two million consoles globally each month but a person familiar with production told the Wall Street Journal that 2.5 million is more likely.

This goes into effect with the new fiscal year which begins in April. Manufacturers under contract with Nintendo now plan to produce 16 million or more consoles, doubling the initial tally of eight million. The Switch has eclipsed the sales of the Wii launch in raw sale numbers in terms of first 48 hours of sales. The Wii went on to sell more than 100 million units becoming Nintendo’s best selling console ever.

A report from suggests the Switch has sold 1.5 million consoles worldwide since launch. To go along with buying a Switch, the report says 89 percent of people who bought the Switch also bought The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

New ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Game Called ‘Sonic Forces’

The new Sonic the Hedgehog game that was once codenamed Sonic 2017 has now received its official title of Sonic Forces. A video showing the new gameplay has been released today as well. Apart from the new graphics, it look very similar to past 3D Sonic games which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The game announced at last year’s San Diego Comic Con as part of the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th anniversary celebration.

A 2D Sonic title called Sonic Mania is in the works too and has been delayed from Spring to Summer 2017. That game will receive a digital only release.

Sonic Forces will be released this holiday season on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and the Nintendo Switch.
