YouTube Restricting LGBT Content: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

An online petition and prominent vloggers say YouTube is restricting LGBT+ content on its platform, and that’s led some people to declare the platform “is over.”

The creator of the petition at Change.org, Daniel James, writes, “Recently YouTube has added a ‘Restricted Mode’ disabling YouTube viewers to discover videos covering LGBTQ+ related topics and is hiding them from the feed on their platform.”

YouTube stresses that the function is optional, says it is “proud to represent LGBT+ voices” on its platform, and says the filter is designed to “filter out mature content for the tiny subset of users who want a more limited experience.” However, many YouTubers – such as Rowan Ellis in a video above – are also voicing their displeasure. They say the platform is hiding some LGBT+ content as supposedly being “inappropriate.” The hashtag #YouTubeisoverparty was trending on Twitter as a result of the controversy.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. People Blame YouTube’s ‘Restricted Mode’ Setting & One Site Says It Even Hid a Video of a Lesbian Couple Reciting Wedding Vows

The Evening Times says people are blaming YouTube’s “restricted mode” setting for filtering out LGBT+ videos.

Gizmodo reported that it had verified that channels “had LGBT-related videos that disappeared on restricted mode. Other restricted videos include a video of a lesbian couple reading each other their wedding vows.”

People tweeted many other examples under the “YouTubeisoverparty” hashtag:

YouTube says of restricted mode, “You can use Restricted Mode to help screen out potentially objectionable content that you may prefer not to see or don’t want others in your family to see on YouTube. We use community flagging, age-restrictions, and other signals to identify and filter out potentially inappropriate content. Restricted Mode is available in all languages, but due to potential cultural sensitivities, the quality may vary.”

What’s upsetting the YouTubers is they say the mode is flagging and filtering out LGBT+ videos (although Gizmodo notes all of them are not being filtered out and adds that other groups, like gamers, say they are also affected).

Others said it was a problem with YouTube’s algorithm versus a targeting of the LGBT+ community.

YouTube’s site says of the function, “Computers in libraries, universities, and other public institutions may have Restricted Mode enabled by the system administrator. If you’re using a public computer and can’t disable Restricted Mode, contact your system administrator.”

2. James Provided Image & Video Comparison to Make the Case That LGBT+ Content Is Being Filtered Out

In the petition, James provides this image comparison to this one.

He also provided a channel removal comparison screenshot, contrasting this with this.

James wrote in the petition, “This petition has been created to show support to the LGBTQ+ community within the YouTube community to express the disagreement in YouTube choice to do this and the belief that anyone and everyone should have access LGBTQ+ across the platform without restrictions.”

His opinion was echoed by people on Twitter, many of whom shared memes and GIFs that accused YouTube of leaving up racist and sexist content.

Others just voiced their upset.

Thousands of people were using the hashtag to criticize YouTube.

3. Prominent Vloggers Have Spoken Out & Say Videos That Don’t Discuss Sex Are Also Being Filtered Out

One prominent vlogger, NeonFiona, has tweeted about the restricted mode. She told Gizmodo “that her videos focused on ‘normalising LGBT+ stuff and especially bisexuality’ and the site says the vlogger “worries that young people who turn to YouTube for information on LGBT issues will miss out.”

She wrote on Twitter: “I want to note that ‘An Honest Chat About Being Single’ discusses sex. My bi videos don’t. It’s just any and all LGBT+ titles being flagged.”

NeonFiona’s Twitter profile describes her as “literal witch, queer icon, professional meme farmer and very famous internet celebrity.”

SeaineLove is a trans vlogger who has tweeted about the controversy.

YouTuber, Rowan Ellis, said in the video exposing the controversy that the restricted mode has filtered out her videos, as well as those of other LGBT vloggers. She filmed a video to question the change.

“We don’t really know how long it’s been there, but it’s something that people are just starting to realize the extent of, particularly with regard to LGBT content,” she said in the video.

4. Google Says the Feature Is Optional & Sexuality Discussions Might Cause It

YouTube has released a statement responding to the controversy:

Gizmodo obtained a statement from Google on the controversy. According to Gizmodo, Google says videos featuring talk of sexuality issues could “trip” the filter.

“Restricted Mode is an optional feature used by a very small subset of users who want to have a more limited YouTube experience,” the spokesperson said to Gizmodo. “Some videos that cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear for users and institutions that choose to use this feature.”

Google provided the same statement to the Gay Times.

5. Critics Say the Filter Is Sending the Wrong Message About LGBT+ Content

According to the Gay Times, YouTube’s restricted mode “aims to protect children and families from inappropriate videos.”

YouTube Ellis says that sends a bad message to LGBT+ youth – implying there’s something wrong with being LGBT+.

“One of the main issues around this is that queer youth cannot get support,” she said in the video she posted to YouTube. “YouTube is one of the only places that queer and trans youth, gay youth, bisexual youth, pansexual youth, asexual youth – any of these kids – have a way into community, have a way into knowledge, have a way into feeling like they aren’t alone.”

James noted in his petition that YouTube has claimed to champion LGBT rights.

“A year ago on the 26th June 2016, YouTube released the video “#ProudToLove – Celebrating Marriage Equality and LGBT Pride Month” onto YouTube Spotlight. The video itself was published soon after Gay Marriage was legalised in America and it received a lot of support from around the world in following the countries footsteps hitting over 7M views to date,” he noted, adding, “#PrideToLove… Stick to it YouTube.”

WATCH: Dog Saves Dog-Bud Stuck in Deep Snow

Kanawha the German shepherd looked back to see that his friend, Knuckles the pit bull, was stuck in a snow pile. He came to her rescue. The video was shared on YouTube by Brian Wagner, however the voice on-camera is female.

Kanawha’s rescue comes at a price, though. After the snow rescue Kanawha chastises Knuckles after for needing his help.

According to Outside Online, German shepherds are one of the top 20 “cold weather” dog breeds. The American Kennel Club writes that the German shepherd was first recognized as a breed in 1908 and is the second most popular dog breed.

Pit bulls, also known as the American Staffordshire terrier, are not as good in cold weather. According to the Pit Bull Rescue Central, “Bully breeds have thin, short-haired coats that do not offer much protection against the cold. They are also prone to skin issues which are often exacerbated by weather elements.”

Poor Knuckles, getting flak for being cold!

WATCH: Man Talks Down Street Fight With Insight About ‘Fake Friends’

A video of a black man who walks up and stops a street fight between two African-American teens is going viral after he gives insight into their “fake friends,” who are recording the fight. The video was shared on YouTube yesterday by Poodieville. We have reached out to Poodieville for more information about the man in the video and its location.

In the video 4-minute video, two teens are shown fighting on the street while their friends record it and laugh. The N-word flies rampant. About 20-seconds in, a man dressed in black comes up and defuses the fight by calling everyone with their phones out “cowards.”

He then points out to the two teenagers fighting that their friends are laughing at them.

After getting a feel for what the fight is about, the man in black asks one of teens who told him to fight the other teen over what information. “Who’s your advisor?” he repeatedly asks the teen.

He then tells the teenagers to stop acting like kids, because they’re not kids anymore, and they’re nearly full-grown men and women. “Don’t make your parents look like this.”

He then forces the teenagers to shake hands.

One YouTube commenter pointed out that the man who stopped the fight may be Muslim, as he addressed one of the filming teens with a traditional Islamic greeting. However, this cannot be confirmed.

WATCH: WikiLeaks Vault 7 Dark Matter CIA Document Leak Julian Assange Presser Playback

Julian Assange gave a livestream presser today prior to the WikiLeaks dump of the Vault 7 Dark Matter dossier, showing documents about the CIA hack of Mac products, including iPhones.

You can watch the entire livestream playback above.

The original livestream skipped a lot. The skipping in the audio had many online followers wondering if the livestream was being attacked. Slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. EDT, the presser didn’t begin until over 2-hours later. The delay and the fact that the feed jumped to new channels multiple times had people wondering if Assange was targeted by a denial-of-service (DDoS) attack by the CIA, Russia, or someone else.

A summary of the documents has been released on the WikiLeaks website. It reads:

Today, March 23rd 2017, WikiLeaks releases Vault 7 “Dark Matter”, which contains documentation for several CIA projects that infect Apple Mac Computer firmware (meaning the infection persists even if the operating system is re-installed) developed by the CIA’s Embedded Development Branch (EDB). These documents explain the techniques used by CIA to gain ‘persistence’ on Apple Mac devices, including Macs and iPhones and demonstrate their use of EFI/UEFI and firmware malware.

Among others, these documents reveal the “Sonic Screwdriver” project which, as explained by the CIA, is a “mechanism for executing code on peripheral devices while a Mac laptop or desktop is booting” allowing an attacker to boot its attack software for example from a USB stick “even when a firmware password is enabled”. The CIA’s “Sonic Screwdriver” infector is stored on the modified firmware of an Apple Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter.

“DarkSeaSkies” is “an implant that persists in the EFI firmware of an Apple MacBook Air computer” and consists of “DarkMatter”, “SeaPea” and “NightSkies”, respectively EFI, kernel-space and user-space implants.

Documents on the “Triton” MacOSX malware, its infector “Dark Mallet” and its EFI-persistent version “DerStake” are also included in this release. While the DerStake1.4 manual released today dates to 2013, other Vault 7 documents show that as of 2016 the CIA continues to rely on and update these systems and is working on the production of DerStarke2.0.

Also included in this release is the manual for the CIA’s “NightSkies 1.2” a “beacon/loader/implant tool” for the Apple iPhone. Noteworthy is that NightSkies had reached 1.2 by 2008, and is expressly designed to be physically installed onto factory fresh iPhones. i.e the CIA has been infecting the iPhone supply chain of its targets since at least 2008.

While CIA assets are sometimes used to physically infect systems in the custody of a target it is likely that many CIA physical access attacks have infected the targeted organization’s supply chain including by interdicting mail orders and other shipments (opening, infecting, and resending) leaving the United States or otherwise.

WikiLeaks Vault 7 Leak Claims CIA Bugs ‘Factory Fresh’ iPhones

A new WikiLeaks Vault 7 leak titled “Dark Matter” claims, with unreleased documents, that the Central Intelligence Agency has been bugging “factory fresh” iPhones since at least 2008.

There are several songs out there that can pick anyone up after any kind of bad day just by simply pushing the play button. 10. “Smile” (2009), Uncle Kracker

Need to smile because you’ve been feeling down? Uncle Kracker can help you out.

The singer may have started out as Kid Rock’s rock and roll buddy, but his 2009 hit song “Smile” from his Happy Hour album makes everyone do just that when they listen to it. The lyrics are pretty much the cutest ever, from when he talks about his love being “cooler than the flip side” of his pillow, and “being better than the best.”

The beat is just uplifting and you can’t help but feel good after hearing it.The track features country music star Sheryl Crow, who sings backing vocals at the end of the title.

What’s better than banana pancakes for breakfast? Probably nothing, right? Well, just ask Jack Johnson all about it. The singer’s song “Banana Pancakes” from his In Between Dreams isn’t just about the delicious meal, but about the cutest relationship ever. The words to the song just make you swoon with happiness.

Feeling lazy? Don’t worry, we’re sure you aren’t the only one. Bruno Mars released his hit song “The Lazy Song” in 2011, and the track does anything but make you feel lazy. It’s adorable lyrics and upbeat music actually is capable of turning your frown upside down.

The words are super relatable, about getting some and lounging with your hands in your pants, allowing it to make you laugh or make your crappy day a little better. The song’s music video is fun, too. Mars is seen literally monkeying around with guys dressed up as monkeys.

7. “What I Got” (1996), Sublime

Is there another band out there with better uplifting beats and rhymes than Sublime? “What I Got” wasn’t only the band’s biggest radio hit ever, but it’s probably their most fun one, too. “Lovin’, is what I got, I said remember that,” is the line they repeat in the song. The flow of the lyrics and enjoyable rhythm is so catchy that you can’t help but get your groove on when you hear it. It’s almost an instant contest whenever you hear it with someone else. Who can sing all of the words? It’s one of those tracks you never skip over on Pandora or when it plays on the radio station, that’s for sure. The flow of the lyrics and enjoyable

6. “Semi-Charmed Life” (1997), Third Eye Blind

Flashback to 1997. Third Eye Blind released their song “Semi-Charmed Life” and it was an instant major hit. According to lead singer Stephan Jenkins, the song was meant as a response to Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” but from a San Francisco perspective. The style of the song reflects changes that were occurring in the San Francisco music scene, particularly a growing interest in hip-hop. That’s not all the tune is about, though.

The beat may be fast and fun pop song, but the lyrics are also about crystal meth addiction. According to Jenkins, “It’s a dirty, filthy song about snorting speed and getting blow jobs.” He later explained to Billboard that, “It’s about a time in my life when it seemed like all of my friends just sort of tapped out on speed.” He added that the song is “bright and shiny on the surface, and then it just pulls you down in this lockjawed mess … The music that I wrote for it is not intended to be bright and shiny for bright and shiny’s sake. It’s intended to be what the seductiveness of speed is like, represented in music.”

5. “Send Me On My Way” (1995), Rusted Root

Remember the movie, Matilda? If so, then you’ll remember this tune.

Rusted Root released a single called “Send Me On My Way” in 1995.  It was released on their album When I Woke.

In February 2013, in an interview with Songfacts, the band’s lead singer Michael Glabicki recalled entering the band’s studio, a warehouse with big windows, on a sunny day, picking up a guitar and just writing the song amidst “a very, very happy feeling” in which “there was a lot of happiness in the room.”

You definitely get that feeling when you listen to the track. You almost instantly smile and want to dance, while all your worries disappear.

4. “Your Love” (1985), The Outfield

“Josie’s on a vacation far away…” Need we say more?

You know you love this song and can’t wait to dance to it. English rock band The Outfield released “Your Love” back in 1985, and it seems like it’s just as big of a hit today as it was back then. The song is so fun that almost every professional sports team has used it as their “walk out” track. It’s also been mocked in plenty of Saturday Night Live sketches and in movies, too. Just ask Melissa McCarthy about that. In her flick Tammy, the tune was featured in the hilarious opening.

Who doesn’t just go nuts and crank this song when it plays anywhere? Seriously.

3. “The Way You Make Me Feel” (1987), Michael Jackson

“Hey, pretty baby with the high heels on…”

Who doesn’t get excited when they hear this particular Michael Jackson song come on? “The Way You Make Me Feel” was written by Jackson and released in November 1987, and still remains an uplifting tune years later. It was reportedly his way of showing people that he was a flirt and able to pick up girls, and not just “Bad.” The lyrics pertain to being in love, as well as the feeling of loving someone. Can anything make you happier than that?

The music video is, even more, fun and epic. It begins with a group of men trying to pick up women, but they don’t get any luck. One of the men aka Jackson is told to go home and not to hang around with the other guys anymore. When the man walks home, an elderly man, who is sitting on the steps of his house, tells him to just be himself. The man notices a woman, played by model/dancer Tatiana Thumbtzen, walking down the streets alone.

Shortly after the man walks out of an alley and stands in front of the woman while she’s walking down the street, although she ignores him and keeps walking. He gets her attention by shouting, and then begins singing “The Way You Make Me Feel” to her while also dancing. Uninterested, she walks away. He follows her, having been cheered on by his friends to pursue her. Another dance routine begins, involving the man’s friends, which leads to the man pursuing the woman throughout the neighborhood. The video ends with the man eventually winning the woman over.

2. “Home” (2010), Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

“Alabama, Arkansas, I do love my Ma and Pa, not the way that I do love you. Holy moly me oh my, you’re the apple of my eye girl I’ve never loved one like you…”

“Home” is a song written and recorded by American group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It was released in January 2010 as the second single from the album, Up From Below. While it’s not as popular as some of the other tunes on our list, this track just instantly brings on the feel-good when you listen to it. Did we mention the lyrics are the cutest ever? The whistling throughout the song just brings you to a fun place, and the old school sound of the track just takes you back and makes you feel like you just came out of a rural country area in the 1970s.

A father and his young daughter also used this song in a YouTube video remake, and it instantly became a viral sensation. Can you say, “the cutest thing ever?”

1. “Happy” (2013), Pharrell

How can you have a “happy songs” list without mentioning Pharrell’s tune “Happy”? The song was written, produced, and performed by the American singer, and comes from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack album. It also served as the lead single from Williams’ second studio album, Girl. It was first released on November 21, 2013, alongside a long-form music video that was an instant hit.

“Happy” is easily the most popular song on this list, and got numerous awards for its uplifting message and beat. Music reviewer Huw Woodward said, “Happy is a rather… well… happy affair with a cheerful beat and exuberant vocal that would indicate that the former N.E.R.D singer is finding a lot of lighthearted fun to be had in both music and life.”

Holly Williams of Contactmusic.com gave it four stars, praising it for being “unbelievably catchy” and “the kind of song that makes you want to dance and sing along.”

“I like that song ‘Happy’…” remarked legendary musician Phil Collins. “I think it’s a great groove and he’s a very smart guy.”

WATCH: Stranger Interrupts Funeral to Make Racially Insensitive Remarks

David Small, a private investigator, appears to have attended a stranger’s funeral service. He got up to make derogatory remarks about Chinese people following the eulogy by the woman’s son, Adrian Wong. The video was shared on Reddit’s “Cringe” subreddit, where it quickly shot to the top.

The video was shared on YouTube by Wong with two separate camera angles. Wong writes about the interruption by Small:

I tried my best to honor my mother Carol Tan Wong who passed away from stage 4 lung cancer on March 2, 2017. She was not a smoker, not exposed to second hand smoke, and went to the doctors as soon as she had a cough that didn’t look like a regular cold. She was simply unlucky. A bigoted funeral attendee – David Small made an impromptu speech afterwards dishonored her memory when he didn’t even know her and used the platform to made racist comments towards Chinese/Asian people. Incense burning and cigarette smoking are not only practiced by the “Asian” community wouldn’t it be more appropriate to talk about religions rather than ethnicity in terms of incense burning. My family doesn’t practice incense burning. To be singled out and implored as representatives of the Asian to fix these issues is abhorrent. Not every Asian person attends an “Asian Church” nor should those that attend be singled out for incense burning or cigarette smoking. What about cigarette smoking by whites, blacks, and hispanics? Or cigarette smoking in general? What happens if I spoke at a Russian funeral and said excess consumption of vodka lead to the person’s early death and I implore them to address this “cultural” issue? Would that be ok? He needs to be held accountable by the community and answer for his ignorant speech.

A second angle of Small’s speech can be viewed below.

Small is the owner of litigationsupportpi.com and is a resident of Massachusetts, like Wong.

According to CBS Boston, Small has issued an apology to the Wongs.

WATCH: ‘Pedophile’ Hits on Andy Milonakis, 40-Year-Old With Growth Hormone Deficiency

Andy Milonakis, a 41-year-old comedian with growth hormone deficiency so he appears to be a teenage boy, was live streaming on Twitch.tv when an older man named William Bows approached him for sex.

Twitch is a live streaming video platform owned by a subsidiary of Amazon.com that gets as much as 100 million page views per month.

While Milonakis is live streaming to his followers, a man is heard off-camera telling Milonakis that he’s throwing a party. He then asks Milonakis if he can join him at his table. Milonakis obliges. The man then offers Milonakis a cigarette and informs him that his name is William Bows and that he’s been arrested for the past 7 days but that the cop let him loose after he promised him a sandwich.

Obviously, there is a mental health component at play, but the video then takes a dark turn.

Bows offers Milonakis some cookies from his grocery bag and then begins to discuss sex. “Where do you hang about?” Bows asks him. “Guess what, you’re coming with me… and guess what, I haven’t had sex in 5 years and I’m not having sex until the time comes… I’m not just about to abuse my friend, especially with the camera.”

The man then says that he’s going to go get some “tobacco.” Milonakis’ Twitch followers tell him to run. Milonakis, however, joins Bows for a walk. Bows appears to fellate a sucker for Milonakis.

Bows then sings about how he’s been in a psych ward. Milonakis makes it a duet. However, when Milonakis has an opportunity to casually leave Bows, he takes it.

Andy Milonakis is most widely known for his appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and for his own show, The Andy Milonakis Show on MTV and MTV2. He was born with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), a medical condition where the person does not produce enough growth hormone. GHD can be treated with growth hormone treatment.
